Il progetto sfrutta le potenzialità di una “residenza borghese”, situata al secondo piano di un edificio degli inizi del XX secolo, per adattarla alle esigenze di una coppia con una figlia.
L’unità abitativa, in muratura portante, è racchiusa tra due muri d’ambito confinanti con altri edifici; presenta un affaccio su strada e uno su un cortile, verso il quale si attesta in parte con un terrazzo, assumendo una conformazione planimetrica a U; secondo le consuetudini dell’epoca, presenta un piano ammezzato; è collegata ad un ulteriore terrazzo situato al terzo livello.
Il progetto non apporta modifiche radicali allo spazio esistente - scandito dalle pareti in muratura portante - e conserva in parte il carattere stilistico delle finiture: infissi esterni, porte e scale interne; identifica le funzioni più adatte alla struttura dello spazio, intervenendo con trasformazioni solo dove necessario.
Il salotto, il pranzo e il soggiorno trovano luogo nei tre spazi “di rappresentanza” in successione, dotati di maggiore altezza, volti verso la strada, vicini agli ingressi; la cucina, anch’essa a doppia altezza, viene ubicata nello spazio passante in comunicazione con il terrazzo; la zona notte viene situata nella parte ovest orientata verso l’interno.
Il progetto ricerca una relazione di continuità tra questi spazi e gli ambienti dell’ammezzato, collegati da due scale interne esistenti, una nella zona cucina, l’altra nella zona notte:
uno spazio studio ad est, che con un piano si proietta sulla cucina sottostante con vista sulla terrazza;
una stanza multi-uso per la figlia ad ovest, con funzione di soggiorno, studio, stanza per gli ospiti;
in adiacenza a un piccolo bagno, una lavanderia/stireria e ripostiglio.
Un’apertura sul disimpegno dell’ammezzato lo mette in comunicazione con lo spazio del salotto.
Una scala esterna in ferro collega la terrazza al primo livello dell’appartamento con la terrazza dell’ultimo piano, dalla quale si gode della vista dell’Etna.
Le esigenze di comodità, di privacy, di socialità della vita della famiglia sono soddisfatte – e rappresentate – da uno spazio connotato dal dialogo tra la persistenza di elementi tradizionali, opportunamente valorizzati, e l’adozione di soluzioni, che mettono in campo le potenzialità di nuove e inaspettate relazioni tra spazi e usi. La qualità della casa vive anche del rapporto con l’invaso pubblico e rappresentativo della strada, con le sue cortine otto-novecentesche, con lo spazio più informale della corte interna all’isolato e con gli orizzonti del paesaggio, che si guadagnano salendo sulla terrazza di copertura.

The project harnesses the inherent qualities of a "bourgeois residence," situated on the second floor of an early 20th-century building, to tailor it to the needs of a couple and their daughter.
The dwelling, constructed with load-bearing masonry, is nestled between two adjacent walls of other buildings, with one façade facing the street and the other opening onto a courtyard, partially extending into it with a terrace, forming a U-shaped footprint. Retaining the era's architectural conventions, a mezzanine level is incorporated, and it is linked to an additional terrace on the third level.
The design refrains from making drastic alterations to the existing spatial layout, characterized by load-bearing masonry walls, while selectively preserving the stylistic essence of the original finishes, including exterior fixtures, doors, and internal staircases. Interventions are made only where necessary, identifying the functions best suited to the spatial configuration.
The living room, dining area, and lounge occupy the three "representational" spaces successively, boasting increased ceiling heights and oriented towards the street, in proximity to the entry points. The kitchen, also double-height, is strategically positioned in a thoroughfare, connecting it with the terrace. The sleeping quarters are situated in the western section, overlooking the interior.
The design endeavors to establish a seamless relationship between these spaces and the mezzanine levels, connected by two existing internal staircases, one adjacent to the kitchen and the other to the sleeping quarters:
the east side hosts a study area, projecting over the underlying kitchen and offering views of the terrace;
the west side accommodates a multi-functional room for the daughter, serving as a living space, study area, and guest room;
adjacent to a compact bathroom, there's a laundry/ironing room and storage.
An aperture in the mezzanine corridor fosters connectivity with the living area.
An external iron staircase links the terrace to the first floor, extending to the rooftop terrace, providing panoramic views of Mount Etna.
The design successfully addresses the family's needs for comfort, privacy, and social interaction, juxtaposing traditional elements with innovative solutions to optimize spatial relationships and functionality.
The dwelling's quality is enriched by its interaction with the public realm, characterized by the historic facades lining the street, the more informal courtyard space within the block, and the expansive vistas offered from the rooftop terrace.
